In the first article in this series, “A Framework for Qualifying Additively Manufactured Parts,” Dr. Kevin Slattery and John E. Barnes defined and mapped the key steps for Qualification, Certification (Q&C), and Production. In the following series, members of the TBGA team partner with industry experts to discuss what is unique about AM and how that impacts Q&C for their industry. In this article, TBGA’s Laura Ely collaborated with NASA’s Alison Park and Paul Gradl to expose the opportunities and challenges AM presents for Q&C of space systems.
Read MoreWe’ve developed a TBGA AM Qualification Framework, which is common to all engineered products that encompass certification and qualification. It starts with requirements like the Systems Engineering V, using the 5 Pillars of Certification, and includes monitoring and tracking of production with a tie back to requirements.

She is a driving force within TBGA and her dedication to AM, the team, and maximizing efficiency has been a tremendous benefit to customers and the organization.
Read MoreThe Barnes Global Advisors (TBGA) has been awarded $1.975 Million to demonstrate a self-sustaining advanced manufacturing production campus tied to critical part needs for the Department of Defense (DoD). This award, funded through the DoD Industrial Base Analysis & Sustainment (IBAS) Program’s National Imperative for Industrial Skills (NIIS) initiative, will focus on workforce development programs through training and hands-on applications in a production environment.
Read MoreThe Army’s AMNOW program completed its objectives in late 2022. The objective of the 3-year program, which originated with the Aviation and Missile Command (AvMC) and led by NCDMM, was to demonstrate a robust, capable, digital AM Supply Chain to support Army readiness. Read more about the team, it’s accomplishments, challenges, lessons learned, and more.
Read MoreMeet TBGA technical innovator and adept thinker Dr. Kirk Rogers, TBGA’s expert lead on AM for castings, training, facility safety, and materials! His involvement and eagerness to share his additive insights and knowledge are a true representation of the passion he has for this industry. He has been instrumental in facilitating TBGA's Purdue Additive Manufacturing Certificate program and supporting in-person training for customers.
Read MoreTo AM or not to AM? That is the question. All new technology requires a balance of evangelism and pragmatism. The suite of processes known as additive manufacturing is no different. We must understand the art of the possible but also balance that with the technical requirements, qualification plans, business case, and people and skills required for success.

Read MoreWhile TBGA ADDvisor® Tim Simpson is winding down one role with AM Magazine, he’s taking on a new adventure as co-host of AM Radio. This is the Tim we know – a jack of all trades – enlightening the AM community with training, design, and innovation expertise. He specializes in design for additive manufacturing, and has helped train and educate more than 1500 industry practitioners to realize AM’s unique value proposition in aerospace, automotive, consumer goods, defense, energy, medical, oil and gas and space industries.
Read MoreAs additive manufacturing’s influence permeates wider industrial circles and more companies consider the benefits it may bring, providing them with the knowledge and tools to push further innovation will be imperative. John Barnes, Founder of The Barnes Global Advisors and CEO of Metal Powder Works, discusses how his two businesses are driving integral change in the field.
Read MoreOften as a boots-on-the-ground ADDvisor®, Chelsea derives most of her experience from testing hardware and software to aid in AM design optimization. Her goals center around learning how various user-workflows impact design for various applications. By orienting design around process principles and target part performance, she can tailor optimization to parts across diverse use-cases.
Read MoreTBGA Stress Test encapsulates our ADDvisors’® 150+ years of combined experience in qualifying and implementing several AM technologies into series production, operating AM printers on the production floor, as well as certifying AM parts in the most regulated industries such as aerospace and medical.
Read MoreAs the predominant expert on all things AM Metals Manufacturing, Qualification and Certification, TBGA ADDvisor Kevin Slattery had a hand in several major events this month. From NAMIC Singapore to Season 7 Las Vegas BattleBots, Kevin always brings insightful data, extensive knowledge, and valuable expertise to the table (or to the BattleBox!).
Read MoreOne of the more useful aids I have seen for this discussion is the AM Maturity Model that John Barnes sketched on the back of a napkin when he began The Barnes Global Advisors five years ago (see image). The model has withstood the test of time, and I refer to it frequently in the AM training that I run with the team as their Educational ADDvisor.
Read MoreLasers and electron beams have been competing for applications for more than half a century when both became viable technologies to precision weld metals. Electron beams produced a deeper weld penetration, but needed vacuum to prevent scattering of the beam, which meant an expensive vacuum chamber limited the size of applications. Lasers had a smaller weld penetration, didn’t require vacuum and were not limited by chambers, but were susceptible to gas contamination. They both had their value propositions and applications, though, as noted, pop culture only popularized one.
